A classic homemade lasagna featuring layers of rich meat sauce, creamy ricotta, and gooey mozzarella cheese, perfect for comforting family meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat. Add onions and garlic, cooking until softened. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, and season with salt and pepper. Let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Mix the Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan, and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth and set aside.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  4. Assemble the Lasagna: Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish. Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce, followed by a third of the ricotta mixture and a third of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat this layering process until all ingredients are used, ending with meat sauce on top.
  5. Top it Off: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese over the final layer of meat sauce.
  6. Bake: Cover the dish with foil (to prevent sticking, use a layer of parchment paper between the foil and cheese) and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Rest and Serve: Allow the lasagna to rest for 15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

Allowing the lasagna to rest before serving helps the layers set for cleaner slices. Customize your lasagna with various ingredients for different flavors.
