A popular dish that beautifully balances sweet, savory, and spicy flavors, perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a gathering with friends.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts, cubed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 6 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp red chili pepper flakes (optional for heat)

Instructions

  1. Prep the chicken: In a bowl, mix the flour, paprika, and garlic salt. Toss the cubed chicken in the mixture until evenly coated.
  2. Heat the oil: In a large skillet or wok, heat a sufficient amount of oil over medium-high heat.
  3. Fry the chicken: Add the coated chicken pieces and fry until golden brown and thoroughly cooked, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. Make the sauce: In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, vinegar, salt, soy sauce, and red chili pepper flakes (if using). Stir and bring to a boil.
  5. Thicken the sauce: Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for 5 minutes to thicken slightly.
  6. Combine chicken and sauce: Add the fried chicken back to the skillet, pour the sauce over the chicken, and stir to coat.
  7. Serve: Remove from heat and serve hot over rice or noodles.

Notes

Adjust the heat level or add your favorite vegetables to suit your taste. For a crispier texture, use cornstarch instead of flour.
