Delight in these flaky, buttery croissants filled with playful surprises, perfect for Halloween festivities.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (or your favorite sweet filling)
  • Optional: 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • Optional: Sweetened cream cheese
  • An egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Black sesame seeds (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add cold, cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add Water: Gradually add the cold water, mixing until the dough forms. Do not overmix; it should be slightly shaggy.
  3. Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap, flatten it into a disk, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Cut the Croissants: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into triangles. The larger the triangle, the bigger the croissants will be.
  6. Fill with Surprise: Place a spoonful of chocolate chips or your chosen filling at the wide end of each triangle.
  7. Shape the Croissants: Starting at the wide end, roll the croissant tightly towards the point.
  8. Final Touches: Place the rolled croissants on a lined baking sheet; brush each one with the beaten egg and sprinkle with black sesame seeds.
  9. Bake: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown and flaky.
  10. Cool and Serve: Allow to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Experiment with fillings for variety. Keep butter and water cold for a flaky texture.
