Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
½ cup vegetable oil
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
¼ cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Black and orange food coloring
Edible orange flowers (like marigolds or nasturtiums)
Candy spiders (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the cake batter by whisking together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and well combined.
Bake the cake by preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Divide the batter evenly between the pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cool the cakes for 10 minutes in the pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Make the frosting by beating the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until combined. Pour in heavy cream and vanilla extract; beat until fluffy. Divide the frosting into two bowls, coloring one black and the other orange.
Frost the cakes by placing one layer on a serving plate. Spread black frosting on top, then add the second layer and frost the entire cake with remaining black frosting.
Create the spider web design by piping concentric circles on top of the cake with white frosting. Use a toothpick or small knife to drag lines from the center outwards.
Decorate the cake with edible orange flowers and optionally add candy spiders.
