A fun and creative Halloween appetizer featuring a spider-shaped pastry filled with delicious meatballs and marinara sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 balls fresh or store-bought pizza dough
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (or substitute with poppy seeds)
  • 1 large pitted black olive, sliced (for decoration)
  • 2 cups marinara sauce (or another smooth dip)
  • 8–12 cooked meatballs (optional, standard or vegetarian)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Take the first ball of dough and divide it into parts: shape one piece into the spider body, and the rest into eight long ropes for legs.
  3. Arrange the body and head on a baking sheet, adjusting them to resemble a spider.
  4. Using your hands, press the dough pieces together to secure their shape.
  5. Whisk the egg in a small bowl, then brush it over the spider shape.
  6. Sprinkle the cheese over the spider legs, and use the olive slices for eyes, attaching them gently.
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown, covering the legs with foil if they brown too quickly.
  8. Cut the second ball of dough into eight ropes for dipping legs, shape and brush with egg wash, then sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  9. Bake the dipping legs for 15–20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Warm the marinara sauce in a saucepan, carefully hollow out the spider body once baked, and fill with sauce.
  11. Serve the spider on a platter surrounded by dipping legs and optional meatballs.

Notes

Consider adding Italian herbs to the dough for extra flavor. Enjoy with garlic bread or a refreshing salad.
