A classic comfort dish combining hearty beef and vegetables in a savory broth, topped with fluffy dumplings that soak up delicious flavors.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef stew meat, cut into cubes
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 4 carrots, sliced
  • 3 potatoes, diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients for Stew: In a slow cooker, combine the beef stew meat, beef broth, carrots, potatoes, onion, peas, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir gently to mix.
  2. Cook the Stew: Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the beef is tender and the vegetables are cooked through.
  3. Prepare the Dumpling Batter: In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the milk and vegetable oil until just combined; avoid over-mixing to keep them fluffy.
  4. Add Dumplings: During the last 30 minutes of cooking, drop spoonfuls of the dumpling batter on top of the stew. Cover the slow cooker to allow the dumplings to steam and rise.
  5. Finish Cooking: Continue to cook until the dumplings are fluffy and cooked through. Serve hot with your favorite bread or a simple salad.
